Industry warns Against rushing Cybersecurity Laws
The peak body representing internet service providers (ISPs) has backed moves to appoint an Australian "cyber tsar" to oversee internet security arrangements, as recommended by a federal parliamentary committee into cyber crime.
But the committee's report, tabled this morning, has sparked debate about how much government intervention is needed to to stop criminal activity online.
One recommendation was to legislate a "detailed e-security code of practice" that would oblige ISPs to tell users if their computers were infected with malware, and would require customers to install antivirus software and firewalls.
Malware - a term that covers viruses, trojan horses and worms - effectively hijacks an end user's computer and can be used to send spam emails, harvest a user's private information or launch attacks on other computers.
The Internet Industry Association (IIA) says it would be premature for the Government to mandate a code of conduct when a similar voluntary code was launched only two weeks ago.
The voluntary code has guidelines on how ISPs can identify suspicious activity and what steps to take once a compromised computer is discovered.
IIA chief executive Peter Coroneos says even without mandatory arrangements, ISPs have a vested interest in preventing malware from infecting their customers' machines.
"Given that the code won't be implemented until December, I think that people rushing to mandate things, before we've been able to demonstrate their effectiveness in a voluntary way is a bit pre-emptive," he said."The code that we've just launched builds on a scheme that has been running now for three or four years ... and recognises the strong self-interest that ISPs have in following its recommendations.
"The ink is hardly dry on this document, so we think it's only fair that it's given a chance to do its work."
He also warned the Government against dictating the terms of a contract to force users to install antivirus software."As much as we would encourage everyone to have up-to-date antivirus and anti-spyware software installed, we have to recognise there is some consumer sovereignty here," he said.
"It would open up the whole question of standards. What would be considered an adequate antivirus product? Who would make that decision? Would that be something the Government would make? Is it appropriate for the Government to take that role?"
'More vigilance'Releasing the committee report at Parliament House today, committee member and Nationals MP Kay Hull said ISPs had to take more responsibility for cybersecurity.
"It is very telling to note that there are few obligations on ISPs, few obligations on retailers and few obligations on consumers themselves," she said."ISPs need to be more vigilant with consumers when they are taking out their accounts."
But network engineer Mark Newton, who has worked in the industry for 20 years, says it would be hard to find people who have invested more time and energy into stopping malware than ISPs."When you think about the business model of an ISP, ISPs have vested self-interest in making those bad things go away," he said.
"A customer who is participating in a denial of service attack has a fairly significant impact on that ISP's infrastructure and cost base."
He says the internet industry has been dealing with threats for several decades and has been able to stay on top of the problem.
"There's a lot of hype about how things are getting worse, but I don't really see that," he said.
"Things get different from time to time because criminals react to countermeasures by changing their approach, but that just means we need to deploy more countermeasures to deal with the changing threat."Mr Newton says the problem with a mandatory code is that it will not be flexible enough to stay up-to-date, as criminals invent new ways to compromise networks.

Facebook to simplify privacy settings
Facebook is all set to simplify its privacy settings in the wake of criticism from users and regulators that the current controls are too complex.
E social networking site is likely to introduce a 'master control' to simplify privacy choices for users, so that the users could share content among three broad categories, such as everyone, friends of friends or just friends.
Facebook executives briefed Simon Davies, of Privacy International, the UK-based pressure group, over its proposed changes last week, following widespread criticism that its privacy settings are not tight enough.
This led to a string of meetings at senior level within the company, culminating in a privacy 'summit' at Facebook's Palo Alto headquarters, according to the Financial Times.
And now, Facebook hopes that the master control would offer a simple alternative to the complicated and frequently confusing settings users currently work with.
In briefings, the company suggested that it aimed to make it easier for its users to opt out of the instant personalisation feature, which automatically shares users' information with third-party websites.
Last December Facebook made changes to its privacy settings.
But, many users complained these were too confusing.

Microsoft Announces Windows Embedded Standard 7 RTM
Microsoft announced the release to manufacturing April 27 of its Windows Embedded Standard 7, which allows manufacturers to utilize Windows 7-based components for the creation of specialized devices such as industry-specific handhelds. The company had originally released a beta of the platform under the name Windows Embedded Standard 2011 in September 2009.
"With the release of Windows Embedded Standard 7, Microsoft has furthered its commitment to the integration of Windows 7 technologies in the specialized consumer and enterprise device markets by providing OEMs with the latest innovative technologies," Kevin Dallas, Microsoft's general manager of the Windows Embedded Business Unit, said in an April 27 statement. Laptops Computer or Desktop

This is one question that asked many people. "Should we get a desktop or laptop?" It’s depending on your requirement. Desktop and Laptop both are same computer.
For and unfortunately, most uses may require the power of a desktop pc. I will list some of the more common uses of a pc and discuss the specs needed.
Office Uses:
Mostly use in office like Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. We also use for mail checking, store data and use like small server. This type of computer have not heavy requirement for extra use. You have able to handle very easy that type of any new desktop or laptop.
Multimedia Applications Uses:
laptops are mostly used for listening to music or watching movies. The only times that it will not be adequate is if you want better components like a much larger and better screen resolution and better sound quality. If you want high resolution viewing, you can connect a laptop to another separate monitor but then you might not be able to go with a higher resolution because of your graphics hardware on the laptop. Also, your sound options are very limited with laptops. All laptops use onboard cards that are adequate for most uses but for the highest sound quality, you will not have it and your external component options are very limited. For desktops, you have a wide range of choices for internal PCI slot upgrades. To sum it up, for high resolution and high definition audio, you may have to go with desktops.
PC Games:
Here I am not talking free in build games in your computer or laptop Solitaire or any other simple game. We are talking about PC Games like Counterstrike, Crysis, Sins of a Solar Empire etc. If you want batter playing of pc games then you have required heavy hardware it will depend on the graphics hardware.
Multimedia Encoding:
If you are looking any video or audio production and encoding, you better go with desktops. You will need lots of hard drive space and most laptops do not have choices for very large drives. You will also need a very good processor and a powerful video card will help too.
The most important are computer installation with Latest OS.

Latest Features of an Operating System
I will introduce some latest operating system features and what are the features that a particular operating system should have used. Some of these features are a part of all operating systems, while some of them may or may not be available in the computer operating system you are using. So I will give you online computer support 24x7 every time.
Managing Hardware/Software
As already know, it is the operating system that causes the software and hardware in a computer to interact with each other. It is also the platform that causes one software in the computer to communicate with another. Once the computer operating system in a computer loads during the booting up process, other application software’s can be loaded into the computer.
Consistent Application Program Interface
Application Program Interface which software development peoples refer to as APIs allow the applications those run on one computer to run on another computer having the same computer operating system. It is important that the operating system has a consistent API. Undoubtedly, every operating system will have deferent type’s requirements, but it should be enough to support computer hardware’s.
Program Execution
The operating system to execute all the types of computer programs running in it. It is a rather more complicated process. It allows to multitasking and allows different programs to run at the same time and share the many types of computer system resources. Here, it requires allotting RAM space to different computer applications running on the computer. The execution of more than one program may also require the computer operating system to prioritize the operations running on the computer system.
Memory Management
we already defined in the part on program execution, it is up to the computer operating system to provide memory to the different programs running on the computer system. It has to prioritize and allocate memory to each application. Even when data is saved in a secondary storage device, it is the computer operating system that decides how that particular chunk of information should be stored.
Networking
Computers need to communicate with each other via networking. A computer without Internet is not even imaginable. It is the task of the computer operating system to provide the required networking features. It allow to you used two or more computers to connect and form a network or connect to the Internet. More on computer networking.
Security
Computer system security that an operating system should provide is undoubtedly one of its most important features. We used passwords setting for logging in, to providing firewall protection; everything comes under the tasks of an operating system. Many network utilities may require printer sharing, file sharing and using TCP/IP protocols. Hence, it becomes very important for the computer operating system to provide proper security so that the computer's security is not compromised in such cases.

Easy Online Support for Windows Registry

The windows system Registry has been called the most important part of any Windows PC operating system (OS), but you probably didn’t even know it exists. There is a good reason for that. Microsoft doesn’t want you messing with it. Like so many other features in Windows, Microsoft chose to hide information considered too powerful to be left in the hands of mere mortals. Only the wisest of gurus can be entrusted with such knowledge.
The registry controls everything and a single mistake can have devastating consequences on the entire OS. Installed programs and applications will write important data into the registry. User defined data and configurations are also stored.
The data is tracked through a tree of folders and it’s called “keys” that branch off the registry nodes. Every key can have sub keys nested in multiple levels. Its data known as “values” are stored in the keys and sub keys. Groups of related keys, sub keys and values are known as hives.
Applications can modify the keys by changing the values, adding new keys or deleting existing ones. More recent versions of Windows will back up the registry and in the event of a problem, will ask you if you want to use the “Last known good configuration.” This was an option that began in the old Microsoft Windows vista days.
The good news is that such configuration issues related to the registry will not affect your important data like documents, photos, etc. The bad news is that many times the problem that caused the crash in the first place may also be saved in the backup versions of the registry.
Many software programs exist to examine registry the keys and make any necessary repairs. These programs can even check your registry for unused keys that clog your system. Removing these keys can significantly improve performance.
For more information on the Windows Registry, check out the Microsoft software support program.

Computer Security & PC Optimization

Computer optimization can be understood as the vital tonic to boost up the system. It has become the major area of concern for the users. Many computer tech support firms are making campaign for computer optimization. They are making use of troubleshooting techniques and implantation of third party software to resolve the issue.
I will concentrate this blog to resolve some general issues. Unfortunately you may face issues where your screen freezes and programs stop responding. Even you are unable to close the windows of some application. This is the disgusting situation. The reason behind could be scarcity of RAM, infection of virus or fault in windows registry.
Notice the time of the freezing, in majority of the cases your system will be able to restore the normal condition by default without any attempt. But if the things are not in favor bring out the Task Manager utility with simple keyboard activity: Press the ‘Alt’, ‘Ctrl’ and ‘Del’ buttons all at the same time. You would land to a Window format, now scroll down the program which is causing the error and choose to end the program. Now, again you can start the program and get the normalcy.
Note: Lower value of RAM is the prime reason behind hence to avoid regular repetition you may upgrade the RAM.
However, you may not be lucky every time. If the concern is not addressed with the Task Manager then the root cause may be virus infection or corruption of Windows registry.
If you don’t have any compatible anti-virus, than opt for the best one available in the market. Some trusted names includes, McAfee, Bitdefender, Kaspersky and so on. Before making download, make sure that they are compatible to your windows platform. The role of the anti-virus program is to scan and remove any virus, spyware, malware, keyloggers, rootkits and so on and do the computer optimization.
Many independent software are available for computer optimization which can fix, Error messages, slow performance, slow internet browsing and many more within few minutes. Some of the best are RegCure PC optimizer, XoftspySE.

Computer Data Backup
Losing data is becoming more and more common as all work and activity regarding businesses, projects, networking, communication etc. has been totally dependable on computers. There are a host of causes for losing data; it includes virus infections, hardware & software failures, accidental loss of data when deleting the wrong files, power failures and so on.
One has to be always well-equipped to encounter such problems, and so it is most important to enable a data backup so that everything can be restored when required for. For the Vista Operating System one can use Windows Vista’s Backup and Restore center to backup your personal files or the entire system. There is also a provision to create a manual backup or even schedule automated backups that can aid in adding new files or the modified files into an original snapshot.
The purpose of this article is to come up with innovative ways for a computer data backup. However as a word of caution, it should be kept in mind that the Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore is not included in Windows Vista Home Basic or Windows Vista Home Premium. To start with the proceedings, one will firstly, have to go to the search field of the Start Menu and type the word "backup". Next, click on the Backup and Restore Center shortcut. Alternatively, you can go to Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Backup and Restore Center.
It is interesting, that inspite of all this, the data backup section also offers two more options: Back up files and Back up computer. Back up files will create a backup of all personal files and folders while back up computer will create a complete backup of the whole computer. It is strongly indicated to create a full data back up of your computer after the computer has been setup for the first time. Windows Vista will take a snapshot of all the programs, settings and files. This snapshot can be deployed even in the event when your computer stops working and then it will restore it to the original state.

Tech support is distributed and classfied into tiers as well. This is done keeping in mind the need to serve businesses better. How much or how importantly a business needs to organize tech support services in their companies depends on their ability to serve their customers. The multi-tier support has been created to get the maximum out of the best service support available in the market.

AVG Anti virus Update

An important factor to remember when one needs to update AVG Anti virus support to Windows 7 is that, it is necessary to update AVG to Version 9.0 to enable the migration to Windows 7. This will also help in accumulating additional features in AVG antivirus support. The major problem with most computers is that, its present or existing AVG is usually not compatible for Windows 7.
It is not well-equipped and does not have the latest features to support the program. There is no guarantee that if one has installed Windows 7, the earlier version will work fine on it. So, it is absolutely necessary to have the latest version of a good antivirus support like the AVG version and install it on Windows 7. Usually, software that have worked on previous version of Windows should work just fine on Windows 7, with the exception of software that installs low-level system components like an Anti-Virus, firewalls, or similar. These packages often are developed to only run on specific versions of Windows.
AVG Anti virus support, by far, is the most popular anti-virus support software out there, and not only does it work just perfectly under Windows 7, but it’s on the list of a small number of software packages that are officially compatible as per the requirements of Microsoft.

Avast! Anti Virus Support for 64-bit Windows
It comes as quite a relief that the Avast! anti virus support now fully renders help to 64-bit Windows platform. This has been enabled in the Avast! Home and Professional versions. This has been seen as a big stride by ALWIL Software as it had been closely watching the proceedings and following up on the whole issue of taking up this platform by Avast!. The Windows XP 64-bit version has an extensive range of supporting up to 32 GB of RAM and 16 TB of virtual memory. A lot of antivirus support software cannot usually support the 64-bit Windows because of its massive storage. The Windows 64-bit version can run applications at great speed when engaged to work with big data sets.
These applications have the propensity to preload a lot more data into the virtual memory enabling quicker access by the 64-bit extensions of the processor. This minimizes the time taken to insert data into virtual memory and also in writing data storage devices. In this way, applications can run a lot quicker with greater control.
Regular antivirus support applications in 32-bit versions of Windows do not run on the 64-bit Windows. This is because the 32-bit versions depend on the 32-bit kernel drivers. However, the Avast! anti virus support application changes this equation by running traditional 64-bit drivers and still deliver the best mode of protection and safety as achieved in the 32-bit Windows. Both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions get installed in the same way.

Computer with Microsoft's new operating system
It is only natural that whenever a new operating system makes its entry into the market, the users of previous versions of the operating system will have sleepless nights trying to figure out if the existing systems will be compatible with the new version available. And here we see Microsoft's Windows 7 and its old users. But Microsoft has devised a way to make it slightly easier for its users to determine if the user's old computer is compatible with its latest version by introducing a Compatibility Center. It will reveal if a computer is outdated to meet the new OS standards or what software or driver upgrade it will require for an upgrade.
The support will be available in the form of a compatibility website, but it will be available only after the release of Windows 7 operating system in stores from October 22, 2009. As the launch draws nearer, thousands of products will be enlisted in the support pipeline where the peripherals and the applications associated with the support will be scrutinized and checked and slowly, with that, with the required data the testing will be carried out. There is also a provision for users to e-mail their product requests and thereafter look for a new gear which will have the logo: Compatible with Windows 7 operating system.
As for other users with other operating systems like Windows XP or earlier versions, Microsoft has asked its users to get help from local computer service provider. The most common procedure would be to undertake a clean installation which means one will have to back up all current files and settings and then reinstall them all over again.

How to making an operating system upgrade
One of the chief components of a computer is an operating system. It is the imperative requisite for a computer to function. Operating systems are constantly getting updated with newer versions being launched every now and then especially from software companies like Microsoft. It is required to make an operating system upgrade in order to meet the needs of the various technologies which are enabled through the latest operating systems for a smoother functioning of home or business needs.
By making an operating system upgrade, a computer will also function and operate more efficiently. Usually, when a user has to purchase a new operating system, it can get quite expensive. So most users stick to an operating system upgrade to suit their budget and meet their needs.
Before enabling the operating system upgrade, a few things need to be kept in mind. This includes figuring out if the hardware on a computer is compatible with the new OS. Usually newer operating systems need higher processing power. Old hardware from old computers does not meet the standards of some operating systems and as a result some applications will not function in the new operating system.
The hardware components which need to be updated to support the operating system upgrade are the CPU speed, Hard Disk, available mass storage space and RAM size amongst other things. The basic requirements are usually accessible from the computer manufacturer's website.

The last smartphone OS
The market for mobile phone operating systems seems to be growing continuously and advancing quite rapidly. Consumers are being wooed by Mobile phone makers and these companies are vying hard by going head to head in a battle to emerge as the winner. It can be observed that in the past few years the smartphone mobile operating system (OS) market has been transformed completely with a regular flow of new contenders entering the market. The Mobile Phone operating System industry seems to be shaken by the emergence of an open platform for operating systems.
These platforms have been trusted and adopted by a couple of smartphone handset makers by taking them under their wings while there are still a some manufactures who choose to be unaffected by the change and are quite adamant to not leave their phones' operating systems open to inquisitive minds of developers who are not authenticated vendors. The issue of open platforms have been a burning topic this year. Initially it was their sole aim to predict an end to fragmentations in the market, but then again when a standard software platform was starting to be adopted by manufacturers, automatically there was a risk of losing the ability to tell them apart.
This resulted in the fragmentation of individual open platforms since the manufacturers started to compete. This trend is pretty obvious as we can see of late as individual manufacturers such as HTC and Motorola have started deploying their own UI and have managed to delve in deep and pull out an operating system which credits itself to managing contact information etc. amongst other things.

New Operating System Upgrade
It is surely a lot cheaper to make an operating system upgrade instead of buying a new one altogether. But there are a few things to keep in mind before the upgrade exercise is carried out. It is important to check and find out if the hardware one has on his computer is compatible with the new operating system and see if it meets all the requirements to support the new OS that is yet to be installed. This is so, because the new operating systems come with higher processing power than the older ones and these ones need more space and efficiency to support the new software that is getting ready to be installed. The older hardware devices usually do not function in the new OS. This is also true for applications.
So one should make a list of all the hardware that has been connected to a computer and enlist all of them to compare it with the requirements that is demanded for the new OS. This list should include the CPU speed, RAM size, Hard Disk free space etc. They are among the prominent ones and a user should not leave any stone unturned to endure an exercise to go through their details and check up on them. They should meet all the requirements for the newer operating system. These details, if not available, with the user then can be accessed from the vendor's website. It will have all the minimum hardware requirements for the new operating system. Usually this should ensure the upgrade but it is always better to back-up all data and copy it into a CD before the upgrade is made.

7 New and Improved Windows 7 Features
Today Windows 7 hits the GA or general availability milestone. That means that you’ll be able to pick up a PC with the OS pre-installed on it, or pick up a disc from your favorite virtual or bricks-and-mortar outlet. To celebrate, here are my top 7 favorite Windows 7 features.
1 - Performance boost
Without a doubt the top Windows 7 feature is performance. On every computer that from monster quad core rigs to humble netbooks, it is seen as a performance boost.
2 – Enhanced Desktop
With Windows 7, it is easier to work on desktop. It comes with three powerful features named Aero Shake, Aero Peek, and Aero Snap. The user who works on modem operating system often complaints about the hassle of juggling of too many windows. Aero peek helps the user by showing the desktop field in the right of the taskbar and displays the outline of the currently open windows, which is mostly the cause of chaos. It provides you with the power of X-ray vision which allows you to peer past all your open windows to the desktop. Point to the taskbar and it will reveal all your hidden icons and gadgets. You can check out for the two new related features that are Aero Shake and Aero Snap.
3 - 64-bit becomes the new default
A recent trend has given much leeway to the 64-bit version, and in the past three years or so, all new PCs have the 64-bit hardware. But with the introduction of Vista, the trend had shifted to mass adoption of the 32-bit version because the Vista could not handle the 64-bit version partition when it came to running programs and accessories like printers and scanners.
If you are working with 32-bit drivers then it will no longer work on 64-bit Windows 7. Now, you need to discard poorly supported hardware as it will no longer be usable.
4 - Improved troubleshooting tools
The Windows Troubleshooting is capable of diagnosing the common operating system related issues, thereby providing solutions to these problems. The new Windows 7 is able to resolve various common problems, so as to make you productive all the time.
The tool makes use of the built-in troubleshooter which carries the solution for different problems. Let us take an example to explain this, the issues related to your local printers can be resolved by using the printing troubleshooter. The troubleshooter provides help in removing the jobs which are clung in the print queue. Also, the problem related to the networked printers can also be resolved by using the printing troubleshooter.
No troubleshooter is perfect, but the work that Microsoft has done in Windows 7 will help many customers fix issues for themselves without having to resort to tech support or trawling the web for answers.
5 - UI improvements
Windows 7 allows you to customize more options than any previous versions of Windows. It allows you to take control over annoying pop-up system messages, and also you can home brew “search connectors” that lets you run web searches directly from Windows Explorer.
- It helps users find the applications and documents they want to work with
- Also once the user has found what they want, the UI fades into the background and allows the user to get on with things
6 - Touch support
Now, you can control what happens on your screen just by using your finger. You can scroll through web pages along with opening programs and launching applications with this simple-to-use technology.
Also, you can sort and resize photos in a more natural way. For all this, you should have the new Windows 7 operating system and a touch enabled monitor. For instance, any program which is compatible with the Windows operating system will now respond to your touch.
7 - XP Mode
XP Mode is a licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 constituted in a virtual hard disk (VHD) that runs under Windows Virtual PC. With Windows XP Mode, you can run Windows XP within Windows 7. USB devices can be added and you can consistently access drives on the host Windows 7 system. What you should notice is that Windows XP Mode allows you to use Windows 7 by offering you a platform to use legacy hardware that is not compatible with Windows 7.

Windows 7 Guide- Understanding The Concept of ReadyBoost
ReadyBoost is a tool of Microsoft Windows, first came with Windows Vista in and also work in Windows 7. It can be used with flash memory, USB 2.0 drive, SD card, CompactFlash or any kind of removable flash mass storage system as a drive for disk cache.
It is also used to facilitate SuperFetch, an updated version of Windows XP's prefetcher which performs analysis of boot-time disk usage patterns and creates a cache which is used in subsequent system boots.
Using ReadyBoost-capable flash memory for caching allows Windows 7 to service random disk reads with performance that is typically 80-100 times faster than random reads from traditional hard drives.
Just plug in a USB flash drive or card and ReadyBoost will use it as memory. ReadyBoost helps in low memory situation. Low memory can make your computer slow. Flash memory offers a speedier alternative.
When you plug a compatible device, the Windows Auto Play dialog gives an additional option to use the flash drive to speed up the system; an additional ReadyBoost tab is integrated to the drive's properties dialog where the amount of space to be used can be set.250 MB to 256 GB of flash memory can be assigned. ReadyBoost encrypts, with AES-128, and compresses all information that is stored on the flash device.
When you set up a device to work with ReadyBoost, Windows shows you the space recommended for an optimal performance. For ReadyBoost to effectively speed up your computer, the flash drive or memory card should have at least 1GB of available space. If you don’t have enough available space for ReadyBoost, you’ll see a message asking you to free some space on the device if you want to use it to speed up your system. You can enable or disable ReadyBoost for a specific flash drive or other removable storage device.
Follow the given guidelines to enable the readyboost in Windows 7:
STEP1: Connect a flash drive or flash memory card into your computer.
STEP2: In the Autoplay dialog box, under General options, click Speed up my system.
STEP3: In the Properties dialog box, click the ReadyBoost tab, and then do one of the following:
To turn ReadyBoost off, click Do not use this device.
To use the maximum available space on the flash drive or memory card for ReadyBoost, click Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost. Windows will leave any files already stored on the device, but it will use the rest to boost your system speed.
To use less than the maximum available space on the device for ReadyBoost, click Use this device, and then move the slider to choose the amount of available space on the device you want to use.
STEP4: Click OK.
In order to use ReadyBoost following are the conditions:
•Windows 7 supports up to eight devices for a maximum of 256 GB of additional memory.
•The device must have an access time of 1 ms or less.
•The removable media's capacity must be at least 256 MB once formatted.
The device must be capable of 2.5 MB/s read speeds for 4 KB random reads spread uniformly across the entire device, and 1.75 MB/s write speeds for 512 KB random writes spread uniformly across the device.

Download tool for Windows 7 pulled by Microsoft
Microsoft has stopped distribution of a tool targeted at making it easier to put Windows 7 on Netbooks amid allegations that the usage makes improper use of open-source code. The software maker said that it has pulled down the Windows USB/DVD Tool while investigating the issue, which was raised sometime back by Windows blogger Rafael Rivera on his Within Windows blog. In his blog post, Rivera opined that Microsoft appears to use code from a tool called ImageMaster that is licensed under the GPLv2 open-source license. The General Public License, in the same way like open-source licenses, allows code to be readily used by others, but has its own set of terms and conditions, such as sharing any devisements made to the code.
Microsoft confirmed it has released a review of the matter and taken the utility off its online Microsoft Store until that inquiry has been completed. It is looking into this issue and is bringing down the tool from the Microsoft Store site until its review is complete. This was revealed in a statement by the company. Though somewhat obscure, the utility is important because it fixes a technical challenge in upgrading the operating system on Netbooks and other PCs sans an optical drive. Microsoft had been exploring for a long time different ways of enabling to help users of Windows XP-based Netbooks move to Windows 7. The tool, which had been released a while back alongside Windows 7, gives the option to users to take a downloadable copy of the operating system and create a bootable drive. The issue is also an obstacle in Microsoft's efforts to show that it can play nice with the open-source community. As ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley notes, it is not the first time Microsoft has been blamed of misusing GPL code.
The most recent dust-up comes as Microsoft is celebrating it's anniversary of its deal with Novell which has enterd the third year, one of Microsoft's biggest endeavours to blend its world with the open-source world.Under that deal, Microsoft entered into an agreement not to sue Novell customers for their use of its Linux distributions.
Microsoft has also released a host of products under various open-source licenses itself, though typically not under the GPL, which it sees as one of the more restrictive licenses. Redmond has been in particular critical of terms in version 3 of the GPL.
The software maker did release a couple of Linux drivers under GPLv2, although it seems its hand may have been forced there. Some have given the impression that the drivers contained GPL code, meaning that they would have necessarily needed to be released back under the GPL. Microsoft has taken a host of different approaches to open-source software, particularly Linux. The software maker has at times agreed on the notion of a heterogeneous world where Linux and Windows co-exist, promising to do better to make sure IT
administrators can manage mixed environments.Otherwise Microsoft executives have lashed out, painting open-source software as violating hundreds of Microsoft patents.
